For small owner-run manufacturers sold through brokers, BizBuySell reported a median cash flow multiple of 3.10 in 2024, up from 2.83 the year before, with wide variation around that figure. Larger companies with professional management sell on EBITDA multiples that can run much higher, depending on size, margins, customer mix and growth. ### How does customer concentration affect the price of my manufacturing company? Buyers discount a business when one or two customers account for a large share of revenue, because losing that account could wipe out the profit they are paying for. Long-term supply agreements, approved-vendor status and a broad customer list reduce that risk. When concentration is high, part of the price is often moved into an earn-out. ### Do I need an environmental assessment to sell a manufacturing business? If real estate is part of the deal, buyers and lenders almost always require a Phase I environmental site assessment. It supports the buyer's defenses to federal cleanup liability and is often a lender requirement. Even in a lease, buyers will review permits, waste handling and any history of spills. ### Can I sell my defense manufacturing company to a foreign buyer? Possibly, but it adds approvals. Companies registered under ITAR must notify the State Department at least 60 days before an intended sale or transfer to a foreign person, and certain foreign investments are reviewed by CFIUS. Talk to export control counsel before you approach any foreign buyer. ### How long does it take to sell a manufacturing company? Many sales take nine to eighteen months from preparation to closing. Buyer diligence on equipment, environmental matters, customer contracts and quality systems takes longer than in a typical service business sale. ## Policies - [Sponsored content policy](https://legalherald.com/sponsored-content-policy/) - [Editorial standards](https://legalherald.com/editorial-standards/)
